Lioness Zora
Another victim of illegal private keeping
Her first years
Lioness Zora spent the first years of her life in private keeping in the Czechia. In 2026, authorities discovered that she was being kept without the required permits and confiscated her. Following her rescue, FOUR PAWS was asked to help provide her with a safe and permanent home. After a temporary stay at Liberec Zoo, Zora arrived at FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary in the Netherlands, where a new chapter of her life began.
When Zora was found, it became clear that she had endured more than just inadequate living conditions. She had been declawed, a painful and irreversible procedure in which the claws and parts of the front toes are removed. This procedure can cause lifelong physical problems, including chronic pain, nerve damage and osteoarthritis. Because declawing affects the way a lion walks and distributes weight, Zora may require specialised care throughout her life.

Settling into sanctuary life
After arriving at FELIDA in July 2026, Zora was given time to adjust to her new surroundings and caretakers from her indoor enclosure. When she was ready to step outside, Zora carefully observed the world beyond the slide door. She took her time, inspecting everything through the opening before finally stepping onto the grass. Once outside, however, her curiosity quickly took over. She explored every tree, shrub and rock in her enclosure with great interest. Her first outdoor adventure showed a lioness eager to discover her surroundings and embrace the opportunities of her new home.
Discovering new hobbies
One of the most encouraging developments since Zora's arrival has been her enthusiasm for enrichment. Whether presented indoors or outdoors, new toys and enrichment items are met with immediate curiosity. Her caretakers have noticed that she eagerly investigates and interacts with whatever is introduced into her enclosure. These activities stimulate both her mind and body, encouraging movement and helping her build strength. This is particularly important because Zora arrived at FELIDA overweight. Excess weight places additional strain on her joints, which are already affected by the consequences of declawing. Through carefully planned enrichment and husbandry routines, the team is helping her become more active and work towards a healthier weight.

Tailor-made care
Because Zora has been declawed, parts of her enclosure have been specially adapted to her needs. Without claws, she has less grip and cannot perform natural behaviours such as scratching trees. Simple activities such as climbing, balancing and interacting with enrichment can also be more challenging. To help her move around comfortably and safely, FELIDA's team has modified her habitat. These adjustments encourage Zora to stay active while reducing the risk of injury and allowing her to confidently explore her environment. After years living in private keeping, Zora is beginning a completely new life at FELIDA. Here, she will receive a species-appropriate diet, expert veterinary care and an environment designed to meet her physical and behavioural needs. For the first time, Zora has the opportunity to leave her difficult past behind. Surrounded by experienced caretakers and veterinary experts, she can gradually build confidence and enjoy the peaceful life every lion deserves
